Education System

New Zealand offers a total English speaking environment for all its students, all subjects are taught in English. The good part is that you would be also joining New Zealanders and encouraged to take part in all aspects of learning along with them, there is no discrimination between you and New Zealand citizen. The British-based system is followed in New Zealand to maintain a universal standard of education. It is very flexible to move between institutions in New Zealand. It is a world class education system.


  • The academic year is from March to November
  • A July start date may be available for some courses
  • Summer semester courses (January to March) may be available
  • New Zealand universities are research based and state owned
  • They offer courses from certificate level through to doctorates

Institutes of technology and polytechnics

  • New Zealand Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics are state owned
  • New Zealand ITPs offer courses that are equivalent in merit to those offered in New Zealand universities
  • ITPs offer courses from certificate level with some offering full degree and postgraduate level studies
  • The academic year is from March to November - a July start date may be available for some courses

Colleges of education

Most of the education institutions have merged with their regional university so course content and start dates will be in line with the universities date.

Student Intake:

The academic year starts from February to November with many programs having a midyear intake in the month of July. The major holiday period is December to February.


English Language Proficiency:

New Zealand colleges and universities accept either TOEFL or IELTS scores as proof of English proficiency
Diploma and Undergraduate Degree:
IELTS              :  Overall score 6.0 with no band less than the 5.5 or
Overall score 5.5 with no band less than 5.0
TOEFL                        :  Total score of 80



Post Graduate Degree:

IELTS              :           Overall 6.5 with no band less than the 6.0
TOEFL                        :           Total score of 90

Education Costs

The tuition fees at various Universities and Colleges are calculated on the course/paper or as per point basis and may vary according to the selection.


  1. Polytechnic courses range from NZ 10,000 to NZ 15,000 per year depending on the course and program.
  2. University degrees range from NZ 18,000 to NZ 25,000 per year for most undergraduate programs.
  3. Postgraduate degrees approx NZ 40,000
  4. Courses in Medicine and Engineering may be more depending on the university & city.

Cost of Living

The total living is between NZ 8,000 to NZ 10,000 per year including accommodation, transportation and entertainment.

Work Scope

Part time work during studies

  1. Students are allowed to work part time 20 hours per week and full time during holidays while studying the course.
  2. New Zealand is the only country which provides a one year job search visa, regardless the course pursued by the student.

Note: Once you secure a job, you can apply for two years of work permit, following which you can apply for permanent residency.

 After studies

After the completion of studies if student secures a permanent job offer (an offer that qualifies the visa requirement) in the related field of study, he/she may apply for a Permanent Residency. Or else a student can stay in New Zealand and search for a job on work permit.
