Istanbul Home to both local and Foreign Students

An Anadolu Agency reporter, of the Council of Higher Education came up with a data about Istanbul being the hub for the maximum number of offshore candidates in Turkey which has over 50 universities. This count has increased to 511,360 students which surprisingly surpasses the population of 41 provinces in the country. After Istanbul, Ankara comes next with 258,773 students and Izmir having 145,557 students from abroad. Hakkari was the least popular centre in Turkey among university students, having a count of only 2,576. This was followed by Sirnak with 3,136 students and Ardahan having 3,733 students.

The past ten years has witnessed Turkey playing host to students from abroad. A Turkish website displayed that these numbers had exactly doubled from 15,000 to 30,000 during the years 2006 to 2011. Out of 155 nations which Turkey accommodates students, Azerbaijani stood first with 4,200 students. Next in line were 4,100 students from Turkmenistan and 3,800 pupils from North Cyprus. Also, a total of 1,300 students from European nations like Germany and Greece were also present in Turkey.

Officials announced the increase in international scholarships being offered by Turkey in an effort to make it popular as an international destination for students. Out of the 54,000 foreign candidates, 13,000 are receiving aid from educational schemes started by government. Almost 90,000 applicants have filed for enrollment from 176 countries which is the greatest count so far as compared to the 56,000 in 2013 and 44,000 in the previous year.
